The Sphinx / La Esfinge
The Sphinx, or La Esfinge, is an enormous wall of red granite with routes from 600 to 950 metres long, so for a big wall climber this is an absolutely compulsory stop when in the Peruvian Andes. Our local guide, Guido, has climbed the most popular route “1985” (or La 85, as it is known in the local climbing community) so many times we’ve almost lost count! This route is a unique opportunity to experience the thrill of climbing a big wall in total security. Along the route that leads to Lake Parón, after a relatively easy approach of 4 hours, you arrive at the base camp close to the wall. The climb can be completed in one or two days, depending on the level of the climber.
Before attempting the Sphinx, we will practice at Hatun Machay or Inka Wakanka to consolidate technical knowledge, equipment handling and ropework.
