Nevado del Tolima
Nevado del Tolima is an active volcano located in the Cordillera Central, belonging to the Los Nevados National Park and rising up to 5215 m.a.s.l. In its foothills lies a well preserved rainforest and paramo (wet moorland) that make Tolima a very diverse mountain. As a result of its volcanic nature, there are hot springs nearby from where it's possible to observe Tolima and its neighbors Nevado Del Ruiz, Nevado de Santa Isabel and Paramillo del Quindio.
“La Sur” (the south face) is a very demanding climb that starts with a trek from 2600 m.a.s.l. and goes through the cloud forest and the paramo before reaching the glacier, accumulating almost 3000 m of ascent. The climb can be done over the course of three days or more, depending on the physical condition of the mountaineers. The camps must be chosen according to the season and the influx of water near the camping spots; the south route passes close to the crater and a secondary crater which emanate dangerous gases and it is important to know the area well in order to remain at a safe distance from them.
